Comments:  I just replaced a seeping Tee in the diesel return line.  Afterwards I started the generator and ran it for 10 minutes - it produced 140A under load of the aft heat pump and hot water heater together.  Trouble began when I started the Perkins - it started blowing lots of smoke, knocking and then cut off.  Checking the engine room, there was massive amounts of oil coming out of the air intake.  Apparently main seals have finally given way.  I checked with a local Perkins dealer who found that a rebuilt engine (less cooling system, fuel system, cylinder head, etc) is $6700.  In addition to that cost, there is the cost of removing the engine, moving the needed parts from the old engine to the new engine and installing the new engine.  His recommendation was a totally new engine for $12,000.  Again this price does not include the cost of removing the old engine and installing the new engine.  We have made the decision to rebuild the current engine ourselves.  I am contacting suppliers for the cost of a major rebuild kit.  I am going to check on the cost of someone else removing the engine - at 800 lbs it would be nice for someone else to assume the responsibility of dropping the engine in the river if such an accident should happen.  Updates as they are available will be made.
