Comments: We sailed 13 miles down river at speeds up to 8.4 kts SOG with the wind gusting up to 25 kts while under main and Genoa.  Mary got to see the gimbaled stove swing while cooking hotdogs.  We had to motor back since the wind was blowing down the river.  Getting out was a trip - Mary at the helm, with 2 dock masters and I pushing Annabelle off the pier (wind was on starboard beam).  Mary gave a sharp pulse of reverse, followed by a second pulse that got us out of the slip without touching the piers.  Spent the morning replacing the knot meter sensor.

Comments:  The Menduni's have spent the past week vacationing in NC.  This their final stop before returning home.  We motored down the Pamlico River (no wind) and dropped anchor.  Mike, Caleb and I went swimming until lunch.  After lunch the picked up to ~ 4kts.  We tried to sail back to Washington, but with a SOG of 1 kt we gave up and motored back.  Caleb got hoisted to the top of the mast.  The pile of dirt with fossils and sharks teeth was a hit with Caleb - he spent hours finding sharks teeth.  Oil pressure held at ~ 25 psi.

Comments: We took the dingy to the shore and lighthouse.  Had a wonderful time.  Got to see a few large sea turtles surface near the boat.  Odyssey (Kathy and Reynolds) made it after getting their engine fixed.  We stopped by and spoke to them on the way back from the lighthouse.  Note added after the trip:  It was after midnight before we arrived in Washington - the day was far toooooo long.  Best advice is to not travel inland at night when it can be avoided.  Of course we could have left before 10:45AM, but we had intended to spend the night in Oriental and not make the entire trip to Washington today.

Comments:  We toured Beaufort to see some of the boats in for the tall ships.  What a zoo.  Coast Guard were there in RIBs with machine guns.  Marine Patrol and Wildlife officers were also present.  The water way was crowded with other people in boats, and most were gawking at those who had been stopped by law enforcement.  In one case a ~20' boat in front of us was rubber necking at someone who had been stopped, and was not aware of us coming up behind them.  We have to maintain some speed to have steerage, so finally with no where to go I blew our horn at them.  A lady in the boat turned around and jumped when she saw us right behind them.  They gave us room to get by.  Once past the Morehead City Bridge the wind picked up from astern to the point we were able to sail for a while under Genoa.  Once it dropped to 3 kts we gave up and started motoring.  It became so hot we got the box fan out and had it blowing on us in the cockpit.

Comments:  We decided to by pass Oriental where we had originally planned to stop for the night.  It was only 3PM when we got to Oriental, so we decided to press on.  The horse flies attacked us in droves as we are heading down the Neuse River.  We had had the screens down, but put them back up for self preservation.  We are just under motor power now as rather large T-storms seem to be approaching us.

Comments:  Rain is coming in now.  After getting to the the junction of Bay River and  the ICW cut up to the Pamlico River, we decided that we could make Washington just after midnight.  The driving reason is that it is hot and humid and making it to Washington will let us plug into shore power and sleep in the comfort of our air conditioners.

Comments:  Just exiting the ditch between Bay River and the Pamlico River.  The Pamlico has 2 foot swells.  We caught up with a barge that had passed us just before leaving Core Creek at Morehead City.  Tried hailing on channel 16 with no response.  So we started a slow pass.  Once we got by and sport fisher boat called the same barge on 16 and got an answer.  The sport fisher passed the barge and we acknowledged slowing down for a slow pass.  Mary was below cooking supper.  Before clearing us the sport fisher speed back up, giving us 3 foot wakes.  Fortunately for Mary the gimbaled stove keep the boiling water from spilling on her.  As the ditch straightened up at the end, the barge passed us again.

Comments:  We have arrived back to our slip in Washington.  It was too dark to continue entries during our motor up the Pamlico River - I really need to fix that situation.  I guess Mary is right about putting some lights in the cockpit!  We motored up the Pamlico River without incident.  Coming out of the ICW into the Pamlico was a little tricky - being dusk and the few lighted navaids were very hard to see.  Fortunately our good buddy the barge was still in sight and we were able to follow him.  The AutoPilot performed well going from waypoint to waypoint.  Across from Bath, lighted navaid G5 was not working.  It took a while to realize this since I could see another green navaid flashing in line where G5 should be.  Radar showed me G5 to be closer than the visual sighting I had.  Several navaids have been added since the last release of my CMAP cartridge date of 04-OCT-00.  Guess I need to see about updating my maps.  We pulled into our slip about 12:45 AM, about 15 minutes later than I had estimated some 6 hours earlier.  The new house batteries are not charging up as they should.  The old batteries started out at 389 AH - which they maintained for over 3 years before starting to loose capacity.   The new batteries only come up to 389 AH once, were at 309 AH when we left and are currently charged at 275 AH.  Being rated at 400 AH, I think I am going to give West Marine a call.  All in all the boat behaved wonderfully, and we had a great time too!
