Comments:  The last hour has been one of the best sails we have ever had.  Continuing on a close reach we hit a top speed of 8.3 kts, but held steady at 7+ kts for long periods.  Temperature in the low 70’s.  Over cast and still threatening rain.  We passed by a fleet of Sunfish sailboats that were on the opposite side of the river, except for one that came across and was close to being in our path before they turned over about 100 yards in front of us.  By the time we had gotten to them, the two teenage boys had still not righted the Sunfish.  I hollered for them to stand on the centerboard – which they did and the boat popped up.  One climbed into the boat, while the other started swimming for a paddle.  Neither had life jackets on, or in the boat.  The boy in the boat was trying to sail to the other boy but did not know what he was doing.  The swimmer started to look tired.  As there were no other boats in the area, we turned Annabelle around and headed back for a rescue.  Just before we got there a power boat came out and picked up the swimmer and towed the Sunfish back across the river.  Lesson we learned – if you see someone in trouble, stop then rather than later.

Comments:  Arrived in Washington, NC.  We made it to just about the railroad bridge before the wind became too erratic to sail pass the bridge.  We had a great vacation – short, but full of good sailing and food too!
